Port Macquarie is located on the east coast of Australia 420 kilometres north of Sydney and 500 kilometres south of Brisbane, at the mouth of the Hastings River. This coastal resort offers some of the most beautiful, pristine beaches along the eastern seaboard with white sand that crunches between your toes.
Port Macquarie is also noted for having one of the most temperate climates in Australia with temperatures ranging between 20 to 32 degrees in summer and 8 to 21 degrees in winter.

Waitui Falls
At some time on your Port Macquarie holiday , you will want to visit Waitui Falls. Waitui Falls is a small but beautiful waterfall that you’ll find right in the middle of an Australian forest. If you didn’t know it was there and just happened upon it during a walk through the woods, you would be very surprised and delighted to see it sparkling in the sunshine, almost as if Mother Nature left it there as an afterthought. As a matter of fact, Waitui Falls is such a stunningly memorable waterfall that it has been captured by photographic artist Dennis Gay in all of its glory for the world to enjoy.
Waterfalls are special, and this one, located on the border of the Coorabakh National Park, is certainly no exception. There is no standard definition of the word “Waterfall” in modern language, nor a universally accepted explanation for just how they came to be. Most of the time, they are thought of as a stream or river of water that is flowing of the edge of a high cliff or slope. This height is important, as the water must come over the cliff with enough force to cause the pooled water below to agitate.

Port Macquarie’s Historical Courthouse
Anytime you are planning a family holiday, it’s a good idea to do some planning ahead to decide what tourist venues you would like to visit. There are many attractions in Port Macquarie that are suitable for people of all ages, so if you are planning to spend some time in this beautiful little town, one of the venues on your list should be Port Macquarie’s historical courthouse.
This structure is the one and only government building from the 1800s to be found in Port Macquarie today. That in itself is quite a rarity, as most of these old buildings around the world are long gone. The history behind the Port Macquarie Courthouse is fascinating. It was built on the corner of Hay and Clarence Streets in the year 1869. Today, this spot is right in the midst of the main shopping street of the city. For some reason, the officials of Port Macquarie felt that there was a compelling need for a new courthouse to be built. A courthouse was already present in the town, but it was in dire need of a remake as it was in extremely poor structural condition.

Macquarie Nature Reserve
One place you certainly don’t want to miss if you are travelling to Port Macquarie on holiday is the Macquarie Nature Reserve. Hopefully, you will be lucky enough to snag one of the holiday rentals Port Macquarie is known for so that you will have a home base waiting for you when you arrive. That will give you one less thing to worry about so that you can quickly start enjoying yourself by visiting attractions like this one.
The Port Macquarie Nature Reserve has a very interesting history. It is as of this writing an animal hospital, built especially to care for the sick and injured koalas in the area. This is the first hospital in the world that is for the treatment and care of koalas only. This is really quite fitting, since the koala is probably the best-loved animal in Port Macquarie – indeed in all Australia. You will probably notice a house on the grounds of the nature reserve, and you may also wonder briefly what a house is doing in an area that is supposedly dedicated to nature and natural things. This house, called Roto House, is an original part of the property, and was built in 1890. It was restored to its original 19th century glory, and now serves as a museum. The National Parks and Wildlife Services owns it, and it is open to the public.

The Alma Doepel is a ship, and what a ship! You just don’t see vessels like this anymore. This is a topsail schooner with not one, not two, but three masts! Take Akuna Seaplanes for example. Their base of operations is in Port Macquarie, right on the town wharf, and as you will see when you go there, some of the planes that they use are a bit different from most. These are float planes, or what some call amphibian planes. They both take off and land on the water! One is an Amphibious 5 passenger 206, and another is a 3 passenger Cessna 172 floatplane. Akuna Seaplanes also has other sizes of these type of aircraft, one of which should satisfy even the most white-knuckled flyer.
